Help during Lockdown2 and Christmas shopping – 2020 style

Before you rush to grab a bargain on Black Friday, or load Amazon up with daily deliveries, why not look more locally for your Christmas gifts?

This year, more than ever, we’ve all appreciated our local area and the people in it who moved heaven and earth to keep the food supplies coming and the shops open when we really needed them – and yes, made sure we all had enough loo roll.

Those same businesess are still there, have made huge numbers of costly changes to comply with ever changing regulations, and need your help!

There are some wonderful local initiatives to help with this, such as #shop local Chesham, Amersham, Chalfont,  a virtual christmas craft fair, and https://tringbuzz.com/shop-local a showcase of local producers, makers, suppliers & services that provide home delivery, click & collect, or online services.

The Chilterns Conservation Board, the statutory body for the AONB, has helpfully put together a starter list of some of the local producers and makers who you can turn to for your daily requirements.

The full article covers the whole Chilterns AONB but the most relevant sections for us are “The central Chilterns” and  “Tring and the northern Chilterns”. There’s also information specifically on the wonderful community shops that are springing up in villages all over the area – our nearest are at Wigginton and The Lee.

We’ve attempted to put together our own list of very local sources of food and other provisions, please do contact us if you know of any others, or would like your business to be added to the list. The list is for information only, and doesn’t imply a recommendation.

Help and advice

  • Chesham Help for Coronavirus Assistance for those unable to leave the house for shielding reasons. We’re coordinating with them to allocate volunteers for anyone in need of assistance. If you volunteered to help last time you should have received an email from us today. If not, or you’d like to help this time round, please get in touch.
  • Chiltern Foodbank Food parcels are now distributed Tuesday to Friday from our centres in Chalfont St. Peter, Chesham and Wendover. Food donations can be dropped off at Chesham TUESDAYS – FRIDAYS 10.00-15.00. Food vouchers are still required from one of our referral partners. The Citizens Advice Bureaux are our largest referral partner with branches in Chesham, Amersham & Prestwood. They are all currently closed for face to face meetings but are operating via telephone number 01494 785660. This is a line dedicated to Foodbank vouchers requests. If there is no reply please leave a voicemail message and they will return your call within 24 hours.
  • Citizens’ Advice Bureau

Food and other provisions

  • Chesham Community Fridge: free food for everyone that has been donated by local businesses/supermarkets. Food is now pre-bagged for social distancing reasons. Open Wednesday and Saturday 10-12.
  • Kennealy’s Fruit and Veg at Chesham Market: Wednesday and Saturday, can deliver.
  • Darvells Bakery, Chesham: free next day delivery in a 5-mile radius of Chesham.
  • The Refill Project: take your own containers. Offering a delivery service for anyone isolating or not able to get out.
  • Goddens Butchers in Chesham. They have a new online ordering system too!
  • Bacon and sausages from Michael Bowden 
  • Milk, papers, potatoes, bread and egg deliveries: Dave Hawkes – 01494 758989 or 07778 637583

Neighbourhood Watch launches PROTECT YOUR Pa$$W0rD campaign with 3 quick and easy steps

As we spend more time at home and on our online devices, over one third (34%) of people say that they’re more concerned about cybercrime than physical crime and a startling 1 in 5 people are a victim of cybercrime!* You could be more at risk than you might think.

If strengthening your passwords is something you keep putting off, or you feel overwhelmed by the sea of online security information, you’re not alone.

As part of our Cyberhood Watch initiative, launched in 2019 in partnership with Avast, we have launched a PROTECT YOUR Pa$$W0Rd campaign that targets both the overwhelmed and complacent, providing everyone with 3 easy steps to be more secure online.

  • Create a separate password for your email account
  • Use 3 random words
  • Turn on two-factor authentication (2FA)

But we won’t stop there! Whilst taking those 3 easy steps will go a long way to protecting yourself online, we want to protect not just you but your whole community! More about the campaign

Our campaign will run on social media for 4 weeks from 9th November 2020. We are targeting both Neighbourhood Watch members and non-members alike with two different attitudes to online security.

For those that are unsure and overwhelmed by an abundance of advice, we want to cut though the noise and simplify the confusion, so they feel empowered to take action.

And for those that think ‘it won’t happen to me’ we want to shock them into action, so that they realise how prevalent the problem is, even amongst young people.

St John’s Bellingdon – Sunday Service 8th November 2020

Dear all

In what seems like no time at all it’s Saturday again and so time to upload our the service for St John’s Bellingdon for Sunday 8th November (Remembrance Sunday) onto YouTube.

Once again we’ve filmed most of it in church and continued with the words and images together – and we’ve stayed with the slightly different angle so that you can still see the flowers and the communion table but add some other shots for the Act of Remembrance (now I’m working on how to make the transition between videos better!).

This week our Psalm is Psalm 70 and readings are 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 and Matthew 25:1-13 and they are read by Fionnagh with me leading the intercessions.

As before the service is available after 09.45 tomorrow when it goes public (and live)!

Our next afternoon service in the building was due to be on 8th November – Remembrance Sunday – but the new lockdown means we can’t meet in the church building. Also if you’d like another way to mark Remembrance Sunday safely then the Royal British Legion are encouraging people to stand in silence outside their houses at 11.00 on Sunday.

Helping local shops to help you

While its tricky to leave the house, and supermarket delivery slots are like hens’ teeth, its an ideal opportunity to look to more local producers, many of whom are offering a delivery service, click and collect, or other innovative shopping methods. Its ever more important to support your local shops, particularly in the run up to Christmas.

Remembrance Sunday, 8th November 2020 – how to commemorate safely

Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day will be a little different this year, but there are still lots of ways you can get involved while following social distancing guidelines.

Our own St John’s Church will incorporate the two minute silence into their weekly service posted on youtube as always, the link will be available on bellingdon.com from Saturday night, and there are some lovely ideas from the Royal British Legion:

With many unable to take part in Remembrance services and events this year, you can still play your part from home and take part in a moment of Remembrance by observing the Two Minute Silence at 11am from your doorstep.

Watch on TV/social media

Although there will be no March Past the Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday, a National Service of Remembrance at the Cenotaph will still take place.

The closed ceremony will be broacast live on BBC One and you can tune in from 10.15am as representatives of the Royal Family, the Government and the Armed Forces lay wreaths at the Cenotaph.

You will also be able to watch a live stream of events from the Cenotaph on our Facebook page.

Virtual Field of Remembrance

During these challenging times it’s important that we still join as a nation to remember the sacrifices made by our Armed Forces. That’s why we’ve created a virtual Field of Remembrance where you can leave a personal tribute.

Festival of Remembrance

On Saturday you can watch the Festival of Remembrance at 9.10pm on BBC One. The socially distanced programme was pre-recorded in October and features an interview with Captain Sir Tom Moore, as well as tributes from TRH The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall.

What we’re remembering this year

In the year that marked 75 years since VE Day and VJ Day, we are celebrating the contribution of every member of our Armed Forces who stepped up to defend our way of life then, and those who continue to do so today, whatever the threat.

Whether it be watching the Remembrance Service on television, or pausing for the Two Minute Silence at your doorstep or front window, we are encouraging people to pay tribute to the service and sacrifice of our Armed Forces in new ways.
